County- Unused and expired prescription or over the counter medications can now be safely disposed of more easily thanks to a new drop box installed last week at the Washington County Sheriff Offices in Fayetteville.
The box is located just inside the main entrance of the Sheriff’s office at 1155 Clydesdale Drive in Fayetteville.
Non-medical use of prescriptions ranks only second to marijuana as the most widely abused drugs in the United States according to the National Survey on 2008 National Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).
The survey also notes that more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined. The 2008 Partnership Attitude Tracking Survey showed that the majority of teenagers using prescription drugs got them from family and friends, including from their home medicine cabinets.
Recent studies have also indicated medications flushed down toilets or rinsed down drains may be making their way into drinking water.
