Night Fishing Excellent in Area

July 7, 2011 by wcobserver

Congratulations to the 2011 Big Bass Bonanza champion, Patrick Chapman, of Parkdale! He took home over $50,000 cash with his winning catch of 6.81 pounds caught on the last day of the tournament in the 11-o’clock hour on a spinner-bait. He was fishing in the Dumas pool.

Here in Northwest Arkansas, fishing has been a blast so far this month. As the month has been progressing so have some of the summer patterns. The fish are really starting to bunch up and are feeding heavily on huge schools of shad. It gets better as the water clears up especially at bigger lakes.

In the morning and late afternoons, terrific top-water action can be had. At midday, when schooling slows down, we are fishing deep points and humps. Mainly with Carolina-rigged and Texas-rigged Berkley powerworms in both 7- and 10-inch. I like using a 7-foot rod or longer, medium heavy, with 20-pound Berkley trilene 100-percent fluorocarbon in this deeper water.

Night fishing is excellent now with black single blade spinner-baits and black buzz-baits. Cat fishing is fair at night on stink-baits. Remember, please don’t mix alcohol and boating unless you want a free ride to town with the law. Make sure to wear a PFD. Safe and good fishing!
