WEST FORK – Cheerleading camp turned out to offer a lot more than work on the fundamentals this summer for nine cheerleaders who will join cheerleaders from around the state to perform at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3, 2012 in New Orleans.
The cheerleaders, who are both junior high and senior high cheerleaders in West Fork were selected to join the Arkansas Dream team, which is comprised of 350 cheerleaders from 80 schools throughout the state.
“It’s a once in lifetime chance for a country girl like me,” said Autumn Gaesswitz.
During the second week in June, West Fork Cheerleaders attended a camp at the West Fork Activity Center; the camp was hosted by B2 Cheer and Dance. Over the three day period, the cheerleading teams learned their competition routine, dance and cheers. They were also evaluated on maneuvers such as jumps, tumbling and dance…and 17 senior high and junior high cheerleaders were given an audition for the Dream Team.
Senior high cheerleaders Taea Mesplay, Riley Franklin, TJ Barnet, and Autumn Gaesswitz and junior high cheerleaders Tori Seaman, Mary Beth Andrews, Ashlyn Stinnett and Haley Dougan and Mackenzie Selph were among those named to the Dream Team and will get to perform during the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 3, 2012.
“We were chosen to perform such an event with some of the top cheerleaders in front of the whole country on TV,” said Seaman.
Andrews said they will learn their Sugar Bowl performance routine via internet and then rehearse with the cheerleaders from the other schools in New Orleans the week before the Sugar Bowl.
The Sugar Bowl appearance won’t be the first time this cheerleading team has gotten national exposure. The West Fork High School Cheerleaders traveled to Orlando in February to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Championships and placed tenth in the small varsity division. They also won first place in the Arkansas 3A State Cheerleading Championship.
