Sewage Overflow Photos – April 2014

This evening, April 10, 2014, I took a little stroll down to the wastewater overflow leak that has been mentioned in the news lately. I wanted to see it for myself in order to form my own opinion about it instead of listening to what was being said about the situation. The trip was eye opening to say the least! I took out my IPhone and immediately took pictures to document my trip and what I was seeing. These are those pictures.

What you are seeing is wastewater (rainwater and sewage from people’s homes) coming out of a crack in the cement around what looks like a manhole. That manhole is the overflow. The ground around the manhole is soaked and coated with a grayish looking sludge and algae looking stuff. Sorry for lack of scientific wording here. I also encountered, and sorry for this also, but it is true, prophylactics (condoms to be specific) in the water and on the ground where the water had been flowing.

The water runs under the Wastewater Treatment fence, travels along the fence and straight out to the river. The wastewater does not go to the Treatment Plant, where it would be treated, at all.

During this little excursion, all I could think is EWWW! and what a shame that this is happening!! In fact, WHY is this happening and WHY hasn’t it been fixed?

Not long ago, the City Council took a “field trip” to the building formerly known as the Christian Church (near the Library) to determine if the City wanted to purchase it. A precedent has been set: I propose the City Council, along with Butch and the Water/Wastewater Commission, take a “field trip” together to the water treatment plant pictured in this article in order to personally investigate the condition described above. Take the press, too. And maybe KNWA as well.

I cannot figure out why no charges are filled against Butch he has been warned, and warned about overflow and now it should be criminal….. and talk about stupid the brain dead city council put him in as city manager I guess he wnts to put the whole town into the sewer but who ever voted to put these idiots on the city council are the ones to blame ..Butch if its no big deal why don’t you get off your lazy ass and take a walk in the river Especially when they have the river clean up its seem its ok for you to let kids and adults try too keep the river clean and you come along and let raw sewage because you can’t get your off your lazy ass to fix it.. This is the quality job Butch does and has been doing for West Fork the entire time he has been at his job. And it came to light with “an email”. There is a lot of things that are swept under the rug here in West Fork. I am so sad we had a mayor in office that was trying to do the right thing and change our “backward, good ole boy, unethical” city government and we are right back where we started. Putting my house up for sale and pray it sales.

Oh brother. I sure do hate to see this stuff plastered all over northwest Arkansas in the Natural State. This could have been planned for, saved for, and fixed years ago. I really wish a public oversight committee would take a full look at our water and wastewater situation. Fresh Water and Wastewater are two resources most West Fork residents depend on. Because of that aren’t we shareholders in this private water and sewer commission?
