Every municipality in the country relies on grants to survive. They can come from various departments in the federal and state government or from the private sector. They can be outright gifts or may require the recipient to match an amount of the grant. Like its neighbors, the City of Greenland (pop. 1,250, despite what the city sign may say) has grant applications in the works at any given time and is now reaping the benefits of three of them. A $17,000 grant from the Arkansas General Improvement Fund which was applied for several years ago will allow for a remodel of City Hall allowing for more office space. Also included is an expansion of the library which is in city hall. The library has plans to move to another location in the future, according to Mayor Bill Groom. The Arkansas Parks and Recreation Department grant in the amount of $25,000 along with matching funds from Greenland will be used to provide new playground for the city park on Wilson Street.
